The Frank Pascoe Cup

The Frank Pascoe Cup award is given to a young person for courage and determination in the face of handicap.In 2004 the Gorsedd council awarded it to Matthew Clewes from Pelynt, Looe.

Truro, Saturday 4th September 2004

This year the Gorseth Ceremony was held on Lemon Quay in the City of Truro.  After donning their robes, the Bards, along with the dignitaries,  processed from Truro Methodist Church along King Street, Boscawen Street and Lemon Street on to Lemon Quay, where they were addressed by Bard and the Mayor of the City, Armorel Carlyon (Nedhores Lyn). In addition to delegates from Wales and Brittany, around 300 Bards attended the ceremony, in their midst 29 new Bards.

The ceremony was followed by a Bardic Tea in Lemon Street Market, and in the evening there was a marvellous concert in the Hall for Cornwall. This Gorseth was a great success, and we look forward to that of 2005 , which will be held at Wadebridge.

The Strategy for the Cornish Language

The Strategy for the Cornish Language has now been published. It spells out the steps to be taken for Cornish to re-establish itself as a widely used community language, including the appointment of a Language Development Officer. Copies are available from County Hall, Truro, in English and the commonest forms of Cornish, or on the Council website at www.cornwall.gov.uk. For details, click here

New Fibreglass Stones

Ty Ddewi 2002

Gorsedd y Beirdd (in Wales) always have their Monday and Friday morning Gorsedd ceremonies in a stone circle. If a stone circle doesn't exist the Gorsedd Architect builds one and it is left behind as monument.

Now the Welsh Gorsedd Board have agreed to buy 17 "stones" made on a steel frame and covered in jazmonite. Each one costs £450 and will last for 50 years.

The Architect of Gorsedd y Beirdd, Ifan LLoyd Williams (Ifan Eryri), is asking Welsh people if they would like to donate a stone.

Gorseth Announces Competition Winners For 2004

Holyer an Gof 2005

Entries are now being sought for the Holyer an Gof Awards for 2005, for a Cornish publication produced during the calendar year of 2004. There is a printed entry form. The closing date for the receipt of all entries is Saturday 26th February 2005. The Award Evening is on Thursday 7th July 2005, and from those winners the overall Holyer an Gof Trophy will be chosen, and the top award presented on Saturday 3rd September at the Gorsedd in Wadebridge.

This year there are seven categories: small presses for books costing less than £12, from publishers producing 3 titles or fewer; larger presses for books retailing for less than £12 from larger publishing houses; books retailing at more than £12; Cornish language books, fiction or non-fiction; A children's book, fiction or non-fiction (new category); books which are illustrative rather than textual (new category); and books of outstanding literary merit.

2005 Competitions Under Way

The Cornish Language Board, in cooperation with the Bishop of Truro’s Advisory Group, has published the New Testament in Cornish. This translation marks the completion of the first phase of the project commenced in 1997 to translate the whole Bible and has been carried out by a team of six translators, whose work has been meticulously checked by the General Editor against the original Greek texts.

Historically a Cornish Bible might have proved a bulwark against the encroachment of English, as happened in Wales, whilst today it is a response to the increased demand for biblical readings in public worship and for use in private devotions.
